Your privacy matters. Galley is a local-first EPUB editor for iPhone and iPad. It requires no account, embeds no third-party analytics SDKs, and keeps your manuscripts on your device unless you export them or enable optional iCloud Drive sync (Pro).
Short Version
- We do not collect personal data on servers we operate.
- We do not embed third-party analytics or advertising SDKs.
- We do not require an account or sign-up.
- Your EPUB projects stay on your device by default.
- Optional sync uses iCloud Drive (Cloud Documents) — not a Galley CloudKit database, and not Google Drive / Dropbox / OneDrive / WebDAV.
- Crash and usage analytics are opt-in and off by default.
- Purchases use Apple StoreKit; we never receive your payment card details.
Manuscripts and project files
EPUB working copies, images, metadata, and optional Pencil markup sidecars are stored in the App’s sandbox (and optionally in your iCloud Drive container when sync is enabled). Galley does not upload your chapters to a Galley-operated server. Export (EPUB, PDF, DOCX) and import (EPUB, DOCX, Markdown) happen on-device at your request.
Data stored on your device
Galley stores data locally, including:
- EPUB project files you create or import (XHTML, CSS, images, OPF, NCX/nav)
- Optional Pencil markup sidecars and annotation exports you create
- Library metadata and cover art you set
- Editor preferences and onboarding state
- Analytics opt-in preference and sync enabled preference
iCloud Drive sync (Galley Pro, optional)
Galley Pro can optionally mirror project folders you enable to
iCloud Drive under your Apple ID (container
iCloud.me.tungngo.Galley). This is Cloud Documents sync, not a
Galley-operated CloudKit database. We cannot access your iCloud contents.
If local and cloud copies diverge, Galley presents Keep Local / Keep Cloud
choices. You can turn sync off in Settings.
Purchases
Galley offers Galley Pro (galley_pro) as a
one-time Non-Consumable via Apple StoreKit. The App reads entitlements
on-device to unlock features. Restore Purchases asks Apple to re-deliver
Non-Consumable purchases for the signed-in Apple ID. We do not receive or
store payment card numbers.
Optional analytics (off by default)
If you turn on Share crash & usage analytics in Settings, the App may:
- Subscribe to Apple MetricKit on-device. Those payloads stay local (system logging of counts only) and are not uploaded to a Galley backend.
- Record coarse product events locally via system logging (for example: app launched). Events do not include chapter HTML, file names, project titles, ISBN values, or paths.
Galley does not upload custom analytics to a Galley backend. Crash insights may also appear in App Store Connect when you share diagnostics with developers through Apple’s system settings. You can turn Galley’s in-app toggle off at any time.
Network requests you initiate
- ISBN lookup (optional): may query Open Library or similar public metadata APIs with the ISBN you enter.
- iCloud Drive sync (Pro, optional): Apple iCloud Drive for folders you choose to sync.
- StoreKit: Apple commerce endpoints for products and entitlements.
Galley does not embed Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or WebDAV OAuth. Import and export use the system Files / Share Sheet flows you control.
What we never collect
- Name, email, phone number, or mailing address from Galley forms (none required)
- Advertising identifiers (IDFA)
- Precise location
- Chapter text or manuscript content for analytics
- Payment card numbers
Children
Galley is rated for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Your choices
- Analytics off (default) — Settings → Privacy
- Disable iCloud sync — Settings → iCloud Drive Sync
- Delete projects — Library (also remove cloud copies in Files if synced)
- Manage purchases — Apple ID → Purchases; Restore in Settings
Third parties
Galley does not embed third-party analytics or advertising SDKs. Apple provides App Store, StoreKit, iCloud Drive, and (when enabled by you) system diagnostics. Their privacy policies apply to those services.
Changes
We may update this policy for product or legal reasons. The “Last updated” date will change; material changes will be reflected on this page used for the App Store listing.
